Competent Leadership

The competent leader is the newest toastmaster award. The projects in this manual give you the opportunity to develop and practice skills in thinking critically, listening, planning, organizing, managing time, facilitating, mentoring and team building. The best part is that you can develop these skills just by taking on roles at your club meeting.

That’s right. You can earn this award by participating in your club meetings. What could be easier? As long as you are doing the work, why not get the credit?

The challenge to earning this award isn’t doing the work: anyone who regularly attends club meetings is already doing that. The challenge is to remember to bring the manual to every meeting and ask another club member to evaluate you.

I’ve started carrying my manual wherever I go. I usually leave it in my car so that I don’t need to remember where I put it. That way I always get credit for any role I fill.
I’ll finish this project before you can say “Toastmaster, fellow toastmasters and welcome guests.”

Allan,

I am on my 3rd "new" Competent Leader manual. It is certainly a wonderful learning experience. Not only do you benefit from feedback on various roles from different people, you can focus your energy on the certain aspect of the role that the project focuses in on. It is a wonderful way to revitalize your experience and keep learning!

Educational Vice Presidents should love the CL manual because if people plan their projects based on the manual, scheduling club meetings should be a breeze.
